Season 2024-25: the 60 years of the rebuilding of the organ
In the early 1960s, the reconstruction of the great organ of Saint-Séverin by the organ builders Alfred KERN and Philippe HARTMANN – under the leadership of the organist Michel CHAPUIS and Father AUMONT, choirmaster – had a strong impact on the world organistic and musical, both by the novelty of the return to an instrumental style of classical aesthetics, and by the musical quality of the new organ, immediately served by a brilliant generation of young musicians around the figure of Michel CHAPUIS, who was the first titular organist.
Blessed and inaugurated on March 8, 1964, the great organ of Saint-Séverin has since been at the center of a very active artistic life, from which we can retrospectively identify five common threads: • A breeding ground for young talents, with numerous auditions allowing young organists to be heard and, for some, to become leading figures. • Great personalities who succeeded one another at the keyboards – organists, composers and improvisers – since Helmut WALCHA who gave the first major recital in April 1964. • An ideal organ for serving early music, the reconstruction having sought to reconstitute the internal structure of the 1745 case and the color of the great French classical full organ, while allowing the service of early German music, especially BACH and BUXTEHUDE. • An original composition, however, favorable to contemporary music and improvisation, from Jehan ALAIN and Olivier MESSIAEN to the collective project of the Livre d’orgue de Reims (Hymnes) created in part in Saint-Séverin in 2016. • A unifying and friendly place, finally, to which many people remain attached, both for the place and for the organ itself. To celebrate this 60th anniversary, the titular organists and the association "Plein-Jeu à Saint-Séverin" have designed a set of events over two seasons, until spring 2025, varying the formats and guests according to these outlines: • Auditions ("Concerts tremplin") with students from the Conservatoires Nationaux Supérieurs of Paris and Lyon, as well as from the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional/Pôle supérieur of Paris-Boulogne-Billancourt and the Conservatoire Gabriel Fauré in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. Some of these auditions will combine the organ with other instruments and singers. • On Sunday, April 28, 2024, a concert by the current titular organists, François ESPINASSE, Christophe MANTOUX and Véronique LE GUEN. • An “open tribune” evening in the fall of 2024, during which several guests will alternate musical moments on the three organs and convivial moments. • In the fall of 2024, a concert of today’s music, around the worldwide premiere of a work from Valéry AUBERTIN for the two organs and the current organists of Saint-Séverin. Around this creation will be declined an evening of repertoire from the 20th and 21st centuries. • In the spring of 2025, an improvisation recital by Freddy EICHELBERGER, alternating with the plainchant of the Propre of Saint-Séverin, in collaboration with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles. • Finally, on Saturday May 25th, 2025, a concert around The Art of Fugue by Johann Sebastian BACH, which was performed in Saint-Séverin by Helmut WALCHA in April 1965. This gala evening (including a conference and convivial moments) will be an opportunity to hear the entirety of this major work by the successive holders of the Saint-Séverin organ for 60 years. Many musicians responded positively to our invitation, including the composer Valéry AUBERTIN, the organists Michel ALABAU, Régis ALLARD, Michel and Yasuko BOUVARD, Nicolas BUCHER, Francis CHAPELET, Freddy EICHELBERGER, Aude HEURTEMATTE and Luca AKAEDA-SANTESSON, to which are added the pupils and students of the organ classes of the 5th arrondissement (prof. Françoise DORNIER), the C.N.S.M.D. of Paris (prof. Olivier LATRY and Thomas OSPITAL) and Lyon (prof. François ESPINASSE) and the CRR of Paris (prof. Christophe MANTOUX), as well as the students of the department of early music of the CRR of Paris and the Centre de Musique baroque de Versailles.
